Newton and Gravity (Big Idea Series)
Published in Paperback by Doubleday (August, 1998)
Author: Paul Strathern
Average review score:

A quick read, but shallow
Strathern's summary of the life of Issac Newton is less than 90 pages of unusually large print -- a very quick read indeed. At best, it is a superficial glance that provides little insight into the life or work of Newton.

In many ways, the book is a contradiction. Strathern's approach is more suited to a children's book, but his writing style is intended for an educated adult. For me, the result was fast-paced boredom.

I Love the Book
This book told me several significant points about Issac that I (and most other people) are not aware of. It also inspired me to learn more. It requires a small amount of time to read. For me that is an advantage.

This is a great book for people that avoid fat books which are padded with trivial details that can't be remembered anyway.

Pirate Radio and Video: Experimental Transmitter Projects (Electronic Circuit Investigator Series)
Published in Paperback by Newnes (February, 2001)
Author: Newton C. Braga
Average review score:

Tune Out This Book
Sorry, but if you want to broadcast for more than a few feet, this book is not for you. This book is a collection of low-powered simple circuits, backed with high-powered marketing. The back cover states, "Now that the FCC has changed the laws governing pirate radio and video stations...." While there is now a low-power FM service, for which a type-accepted transmitter and license are still required, there have been no "changes" governing pirate broadcasting. It's still illegal (and fun). And there is nothing in this book that is going to save you "thousands of dollars" over commercial equipment, while giving you the same power and performance. These statements are clearly misleading and get your hopes up (and your wallets out) for something this book is not. It's unfortunate that the author, who is probably capable of doing so, did not write a book to match the promised content.

Outlaw fun for electronics hobbyists!
This book is well-written and it gave me all the details I needed to set up my own pirate radio broadcasting station. The equipment required is cheap but the fun is big!

Pretty good book
I bought this book hoping to read about Christophers trip to the new land, but instead got details about Queen Isabel's inquisition against the Jews, the war against the Arabs, and Christophers life and efforts to hide his Jewish background. His trip and discoveries were mentioned briefly in the last three pages.

This book however was enjoyable, and I do recommend it. It follows the efforts of Queen Isabel to finance her war, the problems the Inquisition caused, the war against the Arabs, and Christopher Columbus's efforts to get approval for his voyage. Too bad it's out of print.

THE BASIC ESSENTIALS OF CROSSCOUNTRY SKIING
Published in Paperback by ICS Books (November, 1990)
Authors: John Moynier, Li Newton, and Eric Gosslen
Average review score:

Starting out
Basic Essentials Cross-Country Skiing appears to be geared towards the beginner skier and someone with a limited understanding of the sport. If this is the goal, the book succeeds quite well. This is not 'basic essentials for advanced cross-country skiing.' Accomplished skiers may find the technique more inexact than basic.

This book is ideal for the average beginner to stuff in their back-pack on a weekend ski outing.

The builders : a story and study of masonry
Published in Unknown Binding by ()
Author: Joseph Fort Newton
Average review score:

great book for a new Mason
This is a great book for a new (or old) Master Mason to read. Joeseph Fort Newton designed this book for new Master Masons under the Grand Lodge of Iowa - but it is in no way specific to Iowa.

Dictionary of Aeronautical Terms
Published in Paperback by Aviation Supplies & Academics (April, 1991)
Authors: Dale Crane and Dennis W. Newton
Average review score:

A pilot's comments
Although this dictionary is big, there are a significant number of terms I was unable to find that are important to instrument/commercial pilots - visual descent point (VDP), for example.

Seems to be more engineering/maintenance oriented because those types of terms are exhaustively covered.

An Equation That Changed the World: Newton, Einstein and the Theory of Relativity
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (Trd) (October, 1997)
Authors: Harald Fritzsch and Karin Heusch
Average review score:

Good information in an interesting format
The information presented in this book is different than usual--it is of an imaginary meeting between Issac Newton, Albert Eienstein, and a modern-day physicist. By there dialog, they explain the Theory of Relativity in a format that anyone can understand, yet gives enough imformation to develop a consise understanding of the theory

Feed Your Eagles!: Inspiring and Coaching Your Sales Team to the Top
Published in Hardcover by Probus Professional Pub (January, 1994)
Author: Derek A. Newton
Average review score:

its all-right
It's ok but kinda dry. Had to read it for my sales (482) class at western. A lot of it is common sense. In a sense, the whole book is like a summary in and of itself

Islands and Ancestors: Indigenous Styles of Southeast Asia
Published in Hardcover by Prestel USA (December, 1988)
Authors: Jean Paul Barbier, Douglas Newton, and Mus Ee Barbier-M Uller
Average review score:

Necessary but not Perfect
Unfortunately there are few texts that provide a survey of Indonesian art and culture. For that reason this book is a must-have for anyone interested in that area. However, the chapters are choppy and at times difficult to read. It is a challenge to determine each chapter's main point and how each chapter relates to the others. More than once I turned a page and thought I had missed a paragraph, because the next word in the sentence did not seem to make sense. This book is valuable for its photographs and for the information it does provide, if you don't mind a less than fluid read.
